Member Spotlight: Need Electrical Trent Sutton’s Spark for Community

Trent Sutton always had a knack for pulling things apart to see how they worked. As a kid growing up in Mangawhai, fixing broken VHS players wasn’t just a pastime—it was a sign of things to come. That curiosity eventually led him into the trades, but it was the path to starting his own business, Need Electrical, that truly lit a fire.

Trent’s journey wasn’t a straight line. From a scholarship in cricket to playing rugby across the country, life pulled him in different directions before grounding him in Taranaki. After completing his apprenticeship and working in high-stress electrical project management roles, it became clear: he needed more than just a job. He needed a life that could work alongside his whānau. With tamariki who need flexibility and support, Trent wanted to build a business that could offer him just that—freedom, balance, and purpose.

But Need Electrical isn’t just about lighting homes or wiring new builds. For Trent, it’s about people. His clients aren’t just customers—they’re neighbours, whānau, and future collaborators. He brings his whole self to the job: skilled sparky, social butterfly, and passionate community member. Whether it’s offering advice to a homeowner on a budget or mentoring a Gateway student, he shows up with manaaki and care.

It’s this same care that fuels his long-term vision. Trent wants to be more than a business owner—he wants to be a role model, especially for rangatahi Māori. Having mentored young workers through personal loss and big life challenges, he sees the value in offering more than just trade skills. He’s helping to grow confident, thoughtful young people with strong foundations—not just future electricians, but future leaders.

Need Electrical is a one-man operation with a big heart. And as Trent would say, “I’m not just a sparky. That’s what I do—it’s not who I am.”
